IIT Roorkee started as the Thomason College of Civil Engineering to train engineers working on the construction of the Ganges Canal during British India. Over time, it evolved into a full-fledged university and later became part of the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology system, known nationally and internationally for technical education and research.
