In 2024, the Uttarakhand government received in-principle approval from the Union Government to establish Centre(s) of Excellence in Roorkee and Pantnagar, aimed at boosting research, skill training, industrial growth, and innovation in the region. The plan was supported by the Union Heavy Industries Minister, following advocacy by the Uttarakhand Chief Minister in New Delhi.
- 📍 Locations: Roorkee and Pantnagar, Uttarakhand.
- 🏗️ Purpose: These Centres of Excellence are envisioned as hubs for leadership, best practices, research, support, and specialised training in key industrial and technical fields. They help attract investment, strengthen regional industries, and create job opportunities.
- 🪪 Land Proposal: Uttarakhand has requested transfer of 492 acres of unused land owned by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) at Haridwar to the state government — including land near Roorkee — to build the CoE infrastructure.
- 📈 Regional Impact: If realised, this development could significantly support industrial expansion, ease of doing business, and employment for youth in the regions of Roorkee and Pantnagar
