Thomson’s Steps is a historical landmark located within the campus of the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee), in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India. The site is named after Sir James Thomason, the founder of the Thomason College of Civil Engineering—India’s first engineering college and the forerunner of IIT Roorkee. It is both an architectural and cultural symbol of India’s early technical education heritage. Built in the 19th century, the steps lead to the James Thomason Building, which served as the administrative and academic hub of the original Thomason College. The structure exemplifies British colonial-era architecture, featuring grand porticos, arched corridors, and a symmetrical layout that reflects the engineering precision of its time.
